An overview of ISCC certification for clean fuels

ISCC is becoming the leading passport that lets a clean molecule cross into premium offtake markets. Here's what the certification actually involves: the schemes, the timeline, the deliverables, and the places projects most often get stuck.

International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC)

If you produce a low-carbon molecule, e.g. renewable natural gas (RNG), biomethane, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), renewable diesel (RD), ethanol, the market no longer takes your carbon intensity on faith. Buyers, regulators, and lenders want an independent certification body to stand behind the number. For a growing share of that market, the certification they're asking for is ISCC.

ISCC, the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification scheme, verifies that a fuel or feedstock is sustainable and that its greenhouse-gas footprint is calculated correctly and traceable end to end. While ISCC certification is not mandatory for all jurisdictions, in practice it has become a gatekeeper: without it, a molecule often can't command the premium its low carbon intensity should earn.

First, know which ISCC you need

"Getting ISCC certified" isn't one thing. The scheme has several variants, and the right one follows directly from where your molecule is sold and who is buying it. Establishing that early keeps offtake conversations aligned and your documentation scoped correctly from the outset.

ISCC EU

Regulated European market

Recognized under the EU's Renewable Energy Directive. Required when the physical molecule and its sustainability claim move together into the EU regulatory market.

ISCC PLUS

Voluntary & global markets

Used for voluntary markets outside of Europe. For example, once RNG is injected into a domestic grid it can no longer carry a physical ISCC EU claim, so PLUS is the route, and it is typically sufficient for international buyers, such as Japan and Singapore. Because the two schemes share largely the same requirements, a site already certified under ISCC EU can extend to ISCC PLUS with limited incremental effort. The framework applies across biofuels, biomethane, and bio-based and circular materials.

ISCC CORSIA

Aviation

Recognized under ICAO's CORSIA for certifying CORSIA-eligible aviation fuels (e.g. SAF) against its sustainability criteria. This is the route when your molecule feeds international aviation's offsetting obligations, rather than the EU regulatory or voluntary markets.

Why it matters

The scheme you certify under decides which markets you can sell into. Deciding it before you build your documentation avoids re-doing the audit package later, and lets your offtakers anchor their conversations early.

How Mangrove gets you certified

Certification is a shared effort between three parties: the producer, who owns the site and the data; Mangrove, the certification engine that runs the CI/GHG calculations, generates the documentation, and manages the verification workflow end to end; and the certification body (the independent auditor) who runs the gap analysis and on-site audit and ultimately issues the certificate.

Left to a producer alone, a first-time certification can stretch across many months of documentation, coordination, and back-and-forth with auditors. With Mangrove, the same path is compressed into a few months and most of the work sits with us. The sequence below shows where we take the load off so your team can stay focused on running the plant.

How a Mangrove-led certification runs

  • 1
We scope and set up1–2 weeks

Mangrove scopes the certification, selects and engages the right certification body on your behalf, and registers the site on the ISCC Hub. A short discovery workshop confirms scope and locks in the audit date. Your team's only job at this stage is to connect your data sources to Mangrove.

  • 2
    We deploy Mangrove4 weeks

Mangrove's platform builds the CI/GHG calculation, stands up the mass-balance tracking system, and assembles the full management-system handbook and chain-of-custody documentation.

  • 3
We run assurance checks to de-risk the audit1–2 weeks

A dry run we manage for you: the certification body reviews the package remotely before the formal audit, so anything missing surfaces early. Because Mangrove has already prepared the package, findings tend to be minor refinements rather than blockers.

  • 4
    We train your teamflexible

Mangrove trains the internal ISCC lead and the staff who will operate the system day to day, so the model keeps running long after the certificate lands. This can run in parallel with the rest of the engagement.

  • On-site auditmilestone

The auditor visits the facility to confirm that what is on paper matches what is on the ground: metering, records, and material flows. Mangrove prepares your team for the visit and is on hand throughout.

  • 5
    Corrective actionsup to 40 days

Mangrove closes out any findings from the audit. Most are minor because the preparation has been thorough.

  • 6
We keep you compliant, around the clockongoing

Certification is not a one-time event. After final sign-off with the certification body, Mangrove keeps running in the background to maintain compliance year-round, so recertifications, renewals, and new programs stay on track and future audits run smoothly.

  • ISCC certificate issued

Your molecules are now market-ready, with a verified carbon intensity buyers can trust.

Mangrove-led work Certification-body milestone

An underrated advantage of this sequence: an indicative CI score is available well before the certificate is issued. Producers can put a credible, defensible carbon-intensity number in front of offtakers months ahead of full certification, often the difference between being in a deal conversation and being left out of it.

What certification requires, and what Mangrove handles

Underneath the timeline, certification comes down to three core deliverables. These are the requirements Mangrove builds and maintains for you, so that by audit day the review is largely a confirmation exercise.

01

Certification body selection

Mangrove selects and engages the right accredited certification body for your scheme and site, so you are not left evaluating auditors on your own.

02

CI / GHG calculation

An ISCC-aligned carbon-intensity model, verified by the certification body. Uses a mix of actual site data and approved default values.

03

Mass-balance tracking

An ISCC-aligned template that reconciles certified inputs to certified outputs, batch by batch, with no leakage.

04

Audit package

The management-system handbook plus supporting evidence files, organized so an auditor can run quick plausibility checks.

05

Audit orchestration

Mangrove manages scheduling, submissions, and issue tracking with the auditor from gap analysis through close-off, keeping the whole process moving.

Where projects get stuck

The certification process itself is well-documented and predictable. The friction almost always shows up in the same few places:

The pattern

Almost every stall traces back to document and data management. That's exactly the gap an operational system of record is built to close: compliance calendars, evidence checks, and live mass balance rather than a folder of spreadsheets.

Mangrove took two of our biogas-to-RNG sites through ISCC gap analysis with no major nonconformities and handed our offtakers a defensible CI score months before the certificate landed.

Clean gap analysis
Audit-ready

Burnham RNG upgrades biogas into renewable natural gas. When they needed ISCC certification to open up premium offtake, Mangrove built the CI/GHG calculation, stood up the mass-balance system, assembled the management-system handbook and evidence files, and coordinated directly with the certification body through gap analysis and beyond. The gap-analysis sessions came back clean, with the auditor treating the handbook as essentially done, and the same playbook now extends to their next sites.

The takeaway

ISCC certification is achievable and increasingly non-negotiable for clean-molecule producers who want real market access. The scheme is clear; the timeline is predictable; the deliverables are well-defined. What separates a smooth certification from a stalled one is whether your data and documentation live in a system built for it or in a pile of spreadsheets that goes stale the moment operations change.
