Mangrove Systems Partners with Pacific Biochar to Launch First Biochar Project on Climate Action Reserve

Pacific Biochar will use Mangrove's digital MRV solution to ensure the project is measured and monitored to the highest level of precision and in accordance with CAR's protocol.

TORONTO, ON (Wednesday, September 4) — Mangrove Systems (Mangrove), a digital monitoring, reporting, and verification (digital MRV) solution provider for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) companies, today announced a landmark partnership with Pacific Biochar, the leading provider of durable carbon removal deliveries in 2023, to launch the first biochar project using the Climate Action Reserve’s newly released U.S. and Canada Biochar Protocol.

Climate Action Reserve, a CCP-eligible crediting program, recently launched the U.S. and Canada Biochar Protocol after undergoing a public comment period in late 2023. The protocol credits activities related to the diversion of biomass from business-as-usual cases, its conversion into biochar, and its application to a durable end use that results in the long-term storage of carbon.

Pacific Biochar’s new project will leverage its existing expertise in biochar carbon removal to bring a project sequestering over 10,000 tonnes of CO2e per year into operation by the end of 2024 registered with the Climate Action Reserve’s new protocol. The first credits for this project are expected to be delivered by mid-2025. Pacific Biochar will leverage Mangrove Systems’ digital MRV solution, Mangrove Nexus, to ensure every aspect of the project, from the sourcing of the biomass to the long-term storage of carbon, is measured and monitored with the highest level of precision and in accordance with the MRV requirements specified in Climate Action Reserve’s biochar protocol.

“This partnership with Mangrove will ensure transparency and accuracy in our project data, meeting the rigorous demands of the Climate Action Reserve’s biochar protocol,” said Josiah Hunt, CEO of Pacific Biochar. “Our collaboration is an important step in scaling our operations and consistently delivering durable, verifiable carbon removal credits.”

“At Mangrove Systems, we believe that accuracy and transparency are key to advancing the carbon removal industry,” added Brandon Vlaar, CEO at Mangrove Systems. “We are thrilled to partner with Pacific Biochar on this groundbreaking project with Climate Action Reserve as they continue to lead the industry in carbon removals.”
